FAQ
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance. At CGCC, we use a standard 4.0 grading scale without plus (+) or minus (-) designations.
Grade Point Values:
- A: 4 points per credit
- B: 3 points per credit
- C: 2 points per credit
- D: 1 point per credit
- F: 0 points per credit
The Calculation:
To calculate your GPA, first, determine the "grade points" for each course. This is done by multiplying the number of credits a course is worth by the quality point value of the letter grade you earned (e.g., a 3-credit 'A' course earns 12 grade points: 3 credits * 4 points/credit = 12).
Your GPA is then calculated by dividing your total grade points earned by your total credit hours attempted for all courses included in the GPA calculation.
Grades Not Included in GPA:
The following grades are **not** included in the computation of your GPA:
- P (Pass): Satisfactory achievement (equivalent to C or better), disregarded in GPA.
- NP (No Pass): Unsatisfactory achievement (equivalent to D or lower), disregarded in GPA.
- SC (Satisfactory Completion): For continuing education units (CEUs).
- NSC (Non Satisfactory Completion): For continuing education units (CEUs).
- I (Incomplete): Temporary mark, changes to F or NP if not completed within one year.
- W (Withdrawal): Student officially withdrew after the drop deadline.
- AU (Audit): Attending a course without receiving a grade or credit.
- R (Repeated): A system mark for a repeated course (see below for GPA impact).
Repeated Courses:
All grades for repeated courses will appear on your transcript. However, only the highest grade earned for a course will be calculated into your GPA and total credit hours earned. All other grades for that repeated course will be excluded from your GPA calculation.
Important Note:
Your CGCC GPA is computed exclusively on grades earned at Columbia Gorge Community College.
Your Grade Point Average is more than just a number; it reflects your academic performance and can significantly impact various aspects of your college journey and future opportunities.
Academic Standing:
Maintaining a healthy GPA is crucial for your academic standing at CGCC.
- Good Standing: To be in good academic standing, you must earn a GPA of 2.0 or higher AND successfully pass 2/3 (67%) of your completed credits each term.
- Academic Warning: Falling below these requirements for one term will place you on academic warning.
- Academic Probation: Failing to make Satisfactory Academic Progress for two consecutive terms will result in academic probation, potentially impacting your ability to register.
- Academic Suspension: Three consecutive terms of unsatisfactory academic progress can lead to suspension from the institution for one term.
Academic Honors:
Your GPA can earn you recognition for academic excellence.
- Term Honors: Awarded each term for students earning at least six A-F graded credits:
- Honor’s List: 3.30 - 3.49 GPA
- Vice President’s List: 3.50 - 3.74 GPA
- President’s List: 3.75 - 4.00 GPA
- Highest Honors: Awarded upon completion of a degree or certificate for students with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher.
Future Opportunities:
Beyond college recognition, your GPA is often a key factor for:
- Scholarship Eligibility: Many scholarships require a minimum GPA.
- Transfer to Other Colleges/Universities: Your GPA is a major consideration for admission to four-year institutions.
- Financial Aid: Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements, which include GPA, are essential for continued financial aid eligibility.
- Career Prospects & Graduate School: Employers and graduate programs often review your GPA as an indicator of your dedication and capabilities.
While many institutions use plus (+) and minus (-) designations, CGCC's official grading system does not. For GPA calculation at CGCC, each letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) corresponds to a single point value. Our GPA calculator is built to reflect this exact policy, so your calculations align with your official CGCC academic record. We understand the value of +/- for personal planning, so we plan to implement this feature in the near future!
