What is the Arts, Culture & Communication pathway?

Are you passionate about creativity, expression, and the power of communication? A career in arts, culture, and communication allows you to transform your passion into a fulfilling profession, and this pathway will help you get there. With the word “art” right in the title, it makes sense that art, both visual and performance, fits into this pathway. Likewise with communication. But what else fits into this category? Some other subject areas that are connected to this pathway are art history, languages, literature, philosophy, theater, music, writing, journalism, media creation and reporting, film studies, and entertainment.

CGCC Programs in the Pathway

Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer

Embark on a comprehensive academic journey with our Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree. This program provides a solid foundation in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, allowing you to explore various disciplines and prepare for a seamless transfer to a four-year institution to continue your studies.

Associate of Arts Transfer – English

This statewide transfer agreement identifies the community college courses that transfer to any Oregon public university when seeking a Bachelor of Arts in English. The study of English places high value on the ability to read intelligently and to write clearly; as such, it opens doors to careers in education, communications law, government, community service, and business. Indeed, the ability to handle the language with clarity and cogency is the skill most frequently cited by business professionals as desirable. A major in English gives students the breadth of outlook and depth of perspective that are increasingly important in twenty-first century careers.

Teaching & Learning

CGCC’s Writing and Literature Program is based on culturally responsive, anti-racist pedagogy that is accessible to all students. Our instructors teach writing as a dynamic process of inventing, drafting, and revising, whereby students learn to clarify complex ideas, question assumptions, and form reasoned conclusions supported by credible, well-cited evidence. CGCC writing instructors stress effort and improvement over perfection, voice over standardization, and originality over conformity.  We value a deeply engaged process over a polished product.

In both Writing and Literature classes, students engage with challenging texts, using discussion and writing to question others’ ideas as well as their own. They explore the wide range of human experiences through close reading and textual analysis, engaged discussions, and writing assignments that prompt academic inquiry, empathy and self-growth. Instructors avoid rote assignments that can easily be completed by Generative AI, which is not allowed in any of our courses. Students enjoy multiple opportunities to write authentically from their own lived experiences in their natural voice.

Our program requires that 60% of all course materials are authored by marginalized voices, including but not limited to women, people of color, people of non-dominant genders and people with disabilities.
