Course Description

Explores both fixed and time/material models, budget flexibility and limitations. Compares dynamic scope verses fixed scope bids, including the calculation of materials and labor costs, timelines/deadlines, and change orders. Prerequisites: MTH 98 or placement into MTH 65. Placement into IRW 115 or WR 115. Audit available.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Create an overall scope, budget, and timeline for work.
  2. Implement a change order, including materials and labor costs.
  3. Communicate effectively with coworkers, industry partners and clients.

Suggested Outcome Assessment Strategies

The determination of assessment strategies is generally left to the discretion of the instructor. Here are some strategies that you might consider when designing your course: writings (journals, self-reflections, pre writing exercises, essays), quizzes, tests, midterm and final exams, group projects, presentations (in person, videos, etc), self-assessments, experimentations, lab reports, peer critiques, responses (to texts, podcasts, videos, films, etc), student generated questions, Escape Room, interviews, and/or portfolios.

Course Activities and Design

The determination of teaching strategies used in the delivery of outcomes is generally left to the discretion of the instructor. Here are some strategies that you might consider when designing your course: lecture, small group/forum discussion, flipped classroom, dyads, oral presentation, role play, simulation scenarios, group projects, service learning projects, hands-on lab, peer review/workshops, cooperative learning (jigsaw, fishbowl), inquiry based instruction, differentiated instruction (learning centers), graphic organizers, etc.

Course Content

Outcome #1: Create an overall scope, budget, and timeline for work

  • Determine parameters of work to be done
  • Preparing budget
    • Determine costs – materials and time, demolition, travel
    • Work within customer budget as appropriate
    • Strategies when shopping for materials
  • Creation of job calendar/timeline
    • Organization of subcontractors’ time
    • Delivery of material
    • Inspection scheduling

Outcome #2: Implement a change order, including materials and labor costs

  • Change order based on upgrades/downgrades
  • Change order addressing work not covered in original estimate
  • Changes require new contract for additional work
  • Permits, inspection, zoning and plan review requirements apply and need to be updated and approved

Outcome #3: Communicate effectively with coworkers, industry partners, and clients.

  • Be prepared for presentations
    • Collect data
    • Understanding client needs
    • Recognizing budgetary constraints
