Help CGCC Help YOU! Calling all Students to Participate in the Healthy Minds Study starting January 31st!

January 25, 2022

3 years ago, Columbia Gorge Community College began a partnership with the JED Foundation to become a JED Campus.  JED Campus is a nationwide initiative of The JED Foundation designed to guide schools through a collaborative process of comprehensive systems, program and policy development with customized support to build upon existing student mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention efforts. Through participation in this program, JED Campus schools embark on a multi-year strategic partnership with JED that not only assesses and enhances the work that is already being done but helps create positive, lasting, systemic change in the campus community.

What does that mean to you?  It means that CGCC has been working hard to improve support services and enhance student success and well-being, both inside and outside the classroom. Recent data show that of the top 10 factors affecting student academic performance, five were related to mental health issues and included stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and sleep difficulties. Being a JED Campus gives us tools to help us help you! Mental health support is a critical part of making sure our students get the tools and support they need to succeed and achieve their personal and academic goals.

As a part of this process, we want to make sure students know about an important opportunity to participate in the Healthy Minds Study starting next week, on January 31st. The Healthy Minds Study, developed by the University of Michigan, is an assessment to help CGCC better understand student needs and improve the supports we provide.

We all know, it has been extra difficult for all of us the last couple of years. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a negative impact on many people’s mental health and wellness, as well as creating additional barriers for individuals who may already be suffering from a mental illness and/or unhealthy substance use. Taking the survey will help us know better how this may have effected our students and tailor future improvements to meet these needs. In addition, by completing the Healthy Minds Study, we can better understand the student experience here, what students need most to be healthy and successful, and how we can continue to improve our services and resources to best fit your specific needs.

Students enrolled in Fall and Winter have already received an initial email about the survey, and will receive another email next week with their individual survey link.  The survey is confidential, can be completed in about 20-30 minutes, and taken at any time from any location or the comfort of your own home.

However, we are also holding some (safe, socially distanced) completion events and are inviting students to come to campus to take the survey.  Food will be provided. In addition to the good you will feel by contributing to the health of our CGCC student body, there will be some fun prizes in store! Students who complete at these events will have additional opportunities to win these prizes, and other prizes available just for these events.  Each student who completes the survey at the event will also receive a free coffee voucher from the cafe, Starbucks, or Dutch Bros. (while supplies last).

Completion events will be Wednesday and Thursday, February 2nd and 3rd, on both The Dalles and Hood River Campuses.  You can learn more by visiting www.cgcc.edu/healthyminds or visiting the website calendar. Then make sure stay on top of your email boxes for more information/reminders about these events and completing the survey as soon as you are able. The survey will remain open and available to complete throughout the month of February if students are unable to start or finish next week.
