Phlebotomy

Students who take this course will gain the knowledge and skills required for employment as a phlebotomist. Students will understand the concepts related to phlebotomy and the laboratory, including non-analytical factors affecting test results, knowledge about basic anatomical systems related to venipuncture and micro-collection, and many of the special tests phlebotomists are required to perform.

After completion of this course and at least 100 hours of on-the job training, the student will qualify to take the National Certifying Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science Phlebotomy Examination.

Course Descriptions

Phlebotomy (Lecture)

This course in conjunction with the Phlebotomy Skills Course (Lab) and at least 100 hours of on-the-job training will qualify the student to take the National Certifying Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NCA) Phlebotomy Examination. This examination is given annually the last Saturday in January and the last Saturday in July. Upon successful completion of this class, the student will understand the concepts related to phlebotomy and the laboratory, including non-analytical factors affecting test results, knowledge about basic anatomical systems related to venipuncute and micrcollection, and many of the special tests that phlebotomists are required to perform. Co-requisite: Phlebotomy (Lab). This class is offered every Fall term.

Phlebotomy (Lab)

This class will be primarily a hands-on lab in which the student will learn various blood drawing techniques. The latest blood borne pathogen information and specimen preparation will also be covered. This class in conjunction with the Phlebotomy Lecture class will begin the process toward national certification. Co-requisite: Phlebotomy (Lecture). This class is offered every Fall term.
