About the Presenter

Flor Fernandez Barrios was born in Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1970 when she was fourteen years old. She graduated in 1985 from International College with a Doctorate degree in Transpersonal Psychology. She is currently in private practice as a psychotherapist in Seattle and is a nationally recognized workshop leader on multicultural issues and spirituality.

A presenter in CGCC's first Series in 2004, the then Spring Writers Series, Ms. Barrios read from her book Blessed by Thunder: Memoir of a Cuban Girlhood and shared her experiences of growing up in Cuba during the early years of the Castro regime. We learned of her struggles but also of the healing strength of family. Her second book, The Mask of Oya: A Healer's Journey into the Empowering Realm of Ancestors and Spirits, published in 2006, takes readers on her personal journey of spiritual growth and transformation. Her most recent book, Candela, published in 2010, is a fiction noverl about a woman's journey in search of her roots and identity. In this follow-up visit with Ms. Barrios, we will learn more about her life following her emigration from Cuba, her pursuit of education, her growth and experiences as a psychotherapist and spiritual healer.
