NUR 60 and admission to the Nursing Program
Introduces the collection and organization of client/patient data relating to nursing care responsibilities in community-based long-term care. Examines the roles and interaction of nursing theory and practice as they relate to the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental and spiritual needs of clients/patients. Prerequisite: NUR 60 and admission to the Nursing Program.
- As Provider of Care: Use the nursing process to collect and organize client/patient data at a beginning level in the long-term care setting.
- As Communicator: Communicate with patients using professional and therapeutic communication techniques in the long-term care setting.
- As Manager of Care: Apply basic nursing care for one to two clients/patients in the long-term care setting, utilizing physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual principles.
- As Member within the Discipline of Nursing: Apply a beginning understanding of professional nursing roles and legal and ethical nursing standards.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Theory: To be able to progress to NUR 111, the student must receive a minimum of 75% on the TOTAL points for five summary exams and one final exam. Grading scale: A: 100 - 90, B: 89-82, C: 81-75, F: less than 75.
Skills Lab: Pass/No Pass- To receive a Pass, the student must satisfactorily complete all specified skills in the campus Skills Lab, and receive a 96% or better on the math test using the ProCalc Software.
Clinical: Pass/No Pass- to receive a Pass, the student must receive a satisfactory rating on one (1) Interactive worksheet (IW)/Care Plan; satisfactory ratings on all Critical Elements of the Clinical Performance-Based Outcome Tool (PBO), and receive no unsatisfactory rating on any clinical performance-based outcome for the clinical experience; and, must receive a pass on all clinical written assignments.
Course Activities and Design
- Theory: The theory content of this course will be presented by means of lecture/discussion groups, role-playing, guest speakers, hand-outs, and audio-visual presentations.
- Skills Lab: The campus lab experience will include video, computer-assisted instruction, demonstration and "hands-on" experience for the practice and development of skills used in nursing.
- Clinical: The clinical practicum takes place in health-care and community-based sites in the Mid-Columbia region. Opportunities to practice skills learned in the campus lab experiences is provided in these settings. The student is expected to be present and on time for all clinical experiences.
- Conferences: Initial and final conferences are scheduled with your Clinical Instructor. Additional conferences will be scheduled as necessary.
- Independent Learning: Students will be required to complete learning activities outside of regularly scheduled class times. For example: Delmar Skills series on CD-Rom. Refer to the calendar for these assignments.
