Continues study of Japanese language and culture, emphasizing effective communicative skills in written and spoken language. Expands practices, products and perspectives of Japanese culture. The third course of a three-course sequence. Prerequisite: JPN 202 or instructor permission. Audit available.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply deepened cultural understandings and recognize Japanese cultural values to interact with native speakers of Japanese and authentic texts.
- Employ an understanding of the Japanese syntactic system to form opinions, comments, explanations, agreements, disagreements and intentions.
- Use intermediate-level Japanese grammatical structures and vocabulary to acquire information in more authentic settings.
- Use effective communicative skills to interact with native speakers of Japanese by managing mid-level formal, some informal and polite formal levels of speech.

Outcome Assessment Strategies
Students will be assessed by any combination of the following:
- Active participation in class.
- Individual presentations.
- Contextual written tasks (in or outside of class) to assess reading, writing, cultural, and aural competencies, as well as quizzes over syllabaries and Kanji.
- Oral interviews with partner or instructor.
- In class, interactive student role-plays.
Course Activities and Design
The course is taught in an immersion-style requiring various levels of collaboration, creativity, and critical-thinking skills; the course is designed to help student develop the control of their learning and respect toward different cultures through hands-on activities:
- One-to-one interviews are graded against a rubric that assesses complexity, comprehensibility, comprehension, fluency, accuracy, and effort.
- Project presentations are graded against a rubric that assesses content, organization, creativity, fluency, accuracy, word choice, and voice.
- Individual or small activities require self-discipline, cultural literacy, and collaborations in a community-like learning environment.
- Japanese word-processing, which enhances critical-thinking will be taught.
- Various writing assignments are graded against a rubric that assesses organization, critical-thinking, voice, accuracy, complexity, fluency, and word choice.
Multicultural activities outside the class may be added. (ex. international festival; field trip; collaboration with another class, etc.) Materials on cultural literacy and social responsibility are either in English or a mixture of Japanese and English. In-depth discussions are done in English.

- To do things like such and such: ...tari...tari
- To use polite forms of verbs in giving and receiving
- States different states of action using verbs with Tokoro
- Cars and driving
- Maintenance and repairs
- Transportation and traffic in the city
- Use of compound verbs such as Teoku, Tearu and Teiru
- Transitive and intransitive verbs

- Body parts
- Feeling and emotions
- Health and Illness
- Describing attributes: the ...ha...ga construction
- Make statements about others using causatives
- Asks for clarifications using interrogatives
- Makes statements using embedded questions
- Expresses reasons using Hazu
