Course Description

Provides the basic concepts of Linux and Windows operating systems. Includes basic operating system functions, file/folder management, disk partitioning and formatting, operating system and application installation, and system configuration. Recommended: CIS 120 or instructor permission.

Intended Outcomes

On successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the basic functions of desktop operating systems.
  2. Explain the different characteristics of:
    1. DOS
    2. Windows 2000 and XP
    3. Linux
    4. Networking Operating Systems
    5. Server Operating Systems
  3. Use commands and tools in command line and GUI operating systems to:
    1. Manage the environment and files.
    2. Run programs.
  4. Define simple LAN and WAN concepts.
  5. Explain how the network operating system controls the network.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Through exams, projects and class assignments students will be assessed to determine if they are able to:

  • Define the basic components of an Operating System.
  • Define the basic components of a Network Operating System and how it differs from an Operating System.
  • Define basic components of a network and their functions.
  • Differentiate between LANs and WANs.
  • Understand how a single-user operating system, multi-user operating system and network operating system differ.
  • Differentiate between command line and GUI operating systems.
  • Work effectively on the DOS and Linux command line.
  • Perform basic user and management functions of a GUI operating system.
  • Understand and perform basic file management.
  • Create partitions and format disks.
  • Update the Windows environment through update.exe with service packs and suggested updates.
  • Differentiate between different filing systems.
  • Use file permissions to control access to files.
  • Manage file ownership.
  • Boot the system.
  • Install an operating system.
  • Install a network client.
  • Define and understand basic terminology of the UNIX operating system.

Course Activities and Design

This course is presented by means of lecture/discussion sessions, assignments, exams, and lab projects.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Interact with the Microsoft Command Prompt and perform such commands as the following:
    • dir
    • md
    • cd
    • rd
    • Copy and xcopy
    • Move
    • Changing devices
    • Edit
    • Type
  • Draw simple network diagram.
  • Use Windows Start menu, Control Panel, and Administrative Tools to manage the Windows environment and provide access to system components.
  • Use Windows Explorer and/or My Computer to manage files.
  • Format and partition disk and install Linux Operating System.
  • Manage the Windows desktop, taskbar, system tray and quick launch areas.
  • Customize a Windows user’s desktop.
  • In Linux environment, perform such commands as the following:
    • Mount and unmount
    • cd
    • mkdir
    • ls
    • cp
    • Create disk partitions using fdisk.
  • Install and use GUI interface for the Linux environment.
  • Manage virtual memory and the swap file.
  • Install and setup the Red Hat Linux 8.0 OS.
  • Work with Linux Daemons to manage print files.
  • Setup Windows environment for automatic updates.
  • Install Windows Updates.
