Oregon Early Learning Council Holds Community Forum in The Dalles

September 6, 2012

Oregon’s Early Learning Council, interested in hearing more from Oregonians across the state, is meeting in the Dalles on September 12 and 13 in a series of meetings around Oregon.

“Oregonians across the state want our youngest children to thrive and succeed once they get to kindergarten,” said Pam Curtis, the volunteer council’s chair. “But each Oregon community is different, and families have different support and different needs. It’s important to get out and around our beautiful and diverse state, to how we may serve all children more effectively.”

Members of the Early Learning Council have scheduled visits, a community meeting and an official council meeting during their time in Wasco County:

COMMUNITY FORUM

Wednesday, September 12

6:30pm, Columbia Gorge Community College, The Dalles Campus, Lecture Hall

An opportunity for community leaders, parents and public to have an informal conversation with Early Learning Council about the state’s policies and goals and the county’s efforts.

EARLY LEARNING COUNCIL MEETING

Thursday, September 13,.

9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Columbia Gorge Community College, The Dalles Campus, Lecture Hall

This is a regular meeting of the council, open to the public to observe and to offer testimony. This meeting will be streamed live here.

The Early Learning Council, established by legislation in 2011, will streamline and strengthen state programs for children from birth to age six and help more at-risk youth arrive in kindergarten with the skills and support they need to succeed in school. Specific strategies include local oversight, incentives for improving the quality of services, integration with health, human services, and K-12 education and, above all, improved accountability.
